MELBOURNE, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Czech Luice Safarova upset the
defending champion Amelie Mauresom 6-4, 6-3 to reach the Australian Open's quarterfinals
here on Sunday.
After slipping behind 1-4 in the opening set, the unseeded Czech teenager reeled off seven straight games to have the French No.2 seed on the ropes.
The 19-year-old then held her nerve, winning on her third match point to set up a quarterfinal clash with either fellow Czech Nicole Vaidisova or Russian seventh seed Elena Dementieva.
"It's amazing, I still can't believe it," said Safarova. "I'm so happy and it's unbelievable."
Safarova had only won one match in her first six grand slam tournaments.
