RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Football legend
Romario finally got an authorization from FIFA to play for club Vasco da Gama in
the first half of 2007, and then continue his pursuit of his 1,000th goal, local
media said on Friday.
According to FIFA's statute, an athlete must not play
for more than two different teams during the same season. Since June 2006,
Romario has left Vasco to play for Miami F.C., in the USA, and then got
transferred to Adelaide United, in Australia. Then, he would only be allowed to
play official matches for another team after June 2007, when the European
calendar closes.
Since Dec. 2006, Vasco has been fighting a judicial
battle in order to get an authorization for Romario to participate in Rio
deJaneiros State Championship, which started on Jan. 24. On Friday, the clubs
attorneys office announced they received a document from FIFA stating that the
striker was free to take part in official competitions.
Vascos next game at the championship will take place
on Wednesday Feb. 7, against team America, of which Romarios father is
coincidently a huge fan. But the player was not confirmed in the team for that
match yet.
According to Romario, he still needs to score 13
goals so that he achieves the 1,000 mark. That was the main reason for his
successive transfers last year, as the 1994 World Cup champion expected to score
more goals in tournaments abroad than in Brazil.
